While inflation was kicking hard at many people, our Analyst Origination and Structuring, Sulyman Sulyman found a way to beat it by saving in dollars and also taking on freelance gigs. In this interview, he shares his low and high money moments in 2022 and more.

What’s your top money lesson in 2022?

What I have learned is that I shouldn’t defer any of my expenses, I should get whatever I want/need immediately because inflation will heighten the prices if I hesitate. The inflation level in Nigeria in 2022 is really high, so get things immediately if there’s a need for them.

What did you spend money on in 2022 that gave you joy?

I'd say food, but I got a big, when I say big, I mean large blender and it has spiced my life. I love cooking and the blender helps. And this in many ways makes me happy. I get to cook a lot, ultimately food is the winner of my heart.

What’s the biggest money mistake you made this year?

This may sound weird, but I don't think I made any mistakes, at least I can't pinpoint any. I have been extra cautious, and I also saved a lot. I'd just say not buying things on time and allowing inflation to beat me were probably the mistakes I made.

What did you spend the most money on in 2022?

It will be my apartment! I got a bigger space and renovations took most of my finances, but I love every bit of it.

How did you up your money game this year?

I took more freelance projects, usually, I do those for free, because it is what I enjoy, but this year, I monetized it, and it has been beautiful earning from that. Oh! And the best of it all is the fact that I save in dollars.

Was this year’s money game better than 2021?

I’d still have to refer to the answer to the previous question, freelancing as a side gig helped my money game get better. Also, if you check the stats for the dollar to Naira disparity since January, you’d notice an increase of close to 60%. Saving in dollars is the koko.

What funny name do you call money?

I sometimes call money resuscitation. It's an inside joke between myself and a friend. “Guy, can you resuscitate me?”
